About

Deterministic extraction, not AI guesswork

DocAssessment surfaces risks, deadlines, and obligations in your legal documents — verifiable, cited, and traceable to source text.

Our Mission

Making legal documents understandable for everyone.

We believe that navigating important life decisions shouldn't require a law degree. Whether you're signing a lease, starting a new job, or reviewing an insurance policy, you deserve clarity about what you're agreeing to.

Our Company

DocAssessment is built and operated by Macpherson Publishing, based in Ontario, Canada.

What We Do

DocAssessment analyzes legal documents and explains them in plain language. We extract key information, identify potential risks, and provide context about what's typical versus unusual.

  • Document Analysis: Extract dates, parties, financial terms, obligations, and more
  • Risk Detection: Flag unusual clauses, one-sided terms, and potential concerns
  • Plain Language Explanations: Understand what provisions mean in everyday terms
  • Typical Range Comparisons: See how your terms compare to common standards

How It Works

DocAssessment uses a two-stage pipeline: deterministic extraction first, AI explanations second.

  • Deterministic Extraction: Pattern matching, natural language processing, and reference libraries extract facts from your document — no AI involved at this stage
  • AI Explanations: AI is used solely to explain what was already extracted — it never performs extraction, guesses facts, or interprets law
  • Transparency: Every risk flag, key point, and explanation cites the specific source text from your document

This architecture means you can trust our analysis because it's grounded in what's actually in your document — not AI hallucinations.

Our Methodology

Most AI document tools send your raw document directly to a language model and ask it to summarize or interpret. This produces confident-sounding output that may contain invented facts — a problem known as hallucination.

DocAssessment takes the opposite approach: deterministic extraction happens before any AI touches the data. Here is the exact sequence:

  1. Text extraction from your document (PDF parsing, OCR for images, Word document parsing)
  2. Keyword-based document type detection — no AI
  3. Pattern-based clause and section segmentation — no AI
  4. Fact extraction using regex and NLP libraries — dates, parties, amounts, deadlines — no AI
  5. Heuristic risk scoring based on extracted clause tokens — no AI
  6. AI explanation layer receives only the already-extracted structured data — never the raw document
  7. Output validation filters forbidden language and enforces uncertainty phrasing

The result: analysis you can verify, risk flags you can trace to source text, and explanations that reflect what is actually in your document.

Privacy First

We take your privacy seriously:

  • 24-Hour Auto-Delete: All documents are automatically deleted within 24 hours of upload
  • No AI Training: We never train AI models on your uploaded documents
  • Anonymous Usage: You can analyze documents without creating an account
  • Encryption at Rest: Stored documents are encrypted for security

Trust & Transparency

DocAssessment is an information tool, not legal advice.

DocAssessment provides factual analysis and plain-language explanations to help you understand your documents. It does not interpret the law, advise on legal strategy, or tell you what to do. For important legal decisions, consult a qualified attorney.

Our goal is to give you the clarity you need to have more productive conversations with legal professionals — not to replace them.
